Greensboro tile and grout

Clear grout sealing or color sealing?

Choose the result you want, then ask whether the treatment suits the grout and tile you already have.

If you are happy with the grout color, ask about cleaning and clear sealing. If you want a more even appearance or a different color, discuss color sealing. Ask about damaged joints separately before choosing either option.

Three different conversations

OptionWhat to discussBefore agreeing
CleaningRemoving soil and assessing the remaining marks.Ask what result is realistic without changing the color.
Clear sealingA suitable protective treatment after cleaning.Confirm the product, material compatibility and included area.
Color sealingA colored treatment to create a more consistent appearance or change color.Review a sample and ask about preparation and future maintenance.

Which local companies advertise the options?

Carolina Tile ↗ and The Groutsmith ↗ describe both clear and color sealing. J Rex ↗ lists sealing and grout color restoration. Ask each company to explain the product it proposes and the preparation included. Those service names alone do not tell you that the treatments are identical.

Other cleaners list sealants or protectants without establishing every option. If a color change matters to you, mention it before arranging the visit.

Does every surface need sealing?

Do not assume the same treatment suits every tile, grout and stone. Ask the cleaner to identify the materials and check any existing coating. The Natural Stone Institute ↗ notes that some stone does not need sealing and that sealing improves stain resistance rather than making stone stain proof.

Tell the company if you have applied a product yourself. Share its name or a photo of the container if available.

Keep repairs on the estimate

Show the cleaner missing grout, loose tiles and damaged joints around the shower. Ask what needs repair before any finish is applied. A color change does not establish that the underlying problem has been addressed.

Request cleaning, sealing and repairs as separate lines. That lets you understand the proposed work before deciding what to book.

Get the waiting times in writing

MAPEI’s sealing guidance ↗ distinguishes curing new grout from cleaning and drying older grout before sealing. A waiting period for new grout is not a rule for every cleaning visit.

Ask when you can walk on the floor, move furniture back, mop and use the shower. Get the actual product instructions and the company’s advice for your room. A general “few hours” estimate may not answer all four questions.

Questions you might have

Will color sealing look exactly like the original grout?

Ask to see a sample and discuss the finished appearance before approving the color. We have not tested the results of these providers.

Is color sealing the same as regrouting?

No. Ask whether the proposal treats existing joints or removes and replaces grout. Those are different scopes of work.

Can I use any cleaner afterward?

Get the care instructions for the surface and treatment used. Avoid assuming a general bathroom cleaner is suitable for natural stone or a new finish.
